Hey, Jean! It Worked.
It was reported today that "only a third of Canadians believe a federal inquiry into the troubled $250-million sponsorship program will get to the bottom of the scandal, according to a national poll." There is little faith left, it seems. The rest of us likely don't know or have forgotten what happened with Adscam, or even what the whole inquiry is about. Who remembers the now torched Hotel Grand Mere and its golf course, the calls to banks to get money for Chretien's buddy so that Chretien could sell him the hotel even though his friend could not get a legitimate loan because he had a criminal record? And the fired bank official? Who remembers any of that?
Today, on the same day that the yawn/amnesia about the inquiry surfaces, the National Post reports that Canadians are largely opposed to same-sex marriage, and that they want a referendum. Is there a media outlet that is not absorbed by the issue at the moment? Canadians have accordingly become absorbed with it, and the inquiry into Liberal Party corruption has become a side show.
Jean Chretien knew what he was doing when he left us with the gay marriage question as part of his exit strategy. Irwin Cotler and the rest of the gang are "useful idiots," and by extension so are we. C'est pas pire! It worked, Jean! It worked! I can see you laughing all the way from here.
